How the Active Ingredients Work
A rinse-off formula combining a regulated exfoliating acid with oil-control and soothing ingredients. Acid levels are set within the limits of your destination market; the system below is adjustable for your positioning and price point.
Salicylic Acid (or LHA)low level, within rinse-off limits
A beta-hydroxy acid that is oil-soluble, so it works inside the pore rather than only on the surface — this is why it is the standard choice for congestion-prone skin. In the EU, Annex III entry 98 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 caps salicylic acid at 2.0% for a face cleanser, under the general ‘other products’ category; rinse-off hair products sit higher at 3.0%, while body lotion and certain colour cosmetics are held to 0.5%. One condition travels with the cap: a mandatory not-for-children-under-3 restriction. We formulate below the cap and confirm the level against your destination market rules. LHA (capryloyl salicylic acid) is available as a gentler alternative with a slower penetration profile.
Tea Tree Oillow level
Melaleuca alternifolia oil, included at a low level for its traditional association with blemish-prone skin. Build in time before that for the claim decision: an acid-based clarifying product needs its claim wording settled early, because the same formula can be a cosmetic claim in one market and a regulated drug claim in another, and that affects your label rather than your formula.
How high can the salicylic acid go?
It depends on your market. Under Annex III entry 98 of EU Regulation 1223/2009, salicylic acid in a face cleanser is capped at 2.0% — the same general limit that applies to most face and body products, with rinse-off hair products allowed up to 3.0% and body lotion plus certain colour cosmetics restricted to 0.5%. The cap comes with a mandatory restriction against use on children under three. Other markets differ. We formulate below the applicable cap and can set the level to the strictest limit across your markets so one formula ships everywhere.
Salicylic acid or LHA — which should we use?
Salicylic acid is the recognised ingredient consumers search for and gives the stronger claim. LHA penetrates more slowly and is generally better tolerated, which suits a gentler positioning. We can sample both.
Can you make a fragrance-free version?
Yes. We can remove added fragrance entirely; note that tea tree oil itself carries a scent, so a truly unscented version usually means reducing or removing it and compensating with other actives.
