How the Active Ingredients Work
An anhydrous cleansing oil whose performance is decided by the oil blend and the emulsifier working together. The system below is our standard ODM baseline, adjustable for your target market and price point.
Self-Emulsifying Systemprimary functional system
The single most important decision on a cleansing oil, and the one most briefs leave out. A PEG-based emulsifier such as PEG-20 glyceryl triisostearate gives the fast, clean milky rinse-off consumers judge the product on. A PEG-free system using polyglyceryl esters suits clean-beauty and COSMOS-oriented positioning but emulsifies more slowly and needs a higher use level. We sample both so you feel the difference before committing, because this choice cannot be reversed cheaply after launch.
Houttuynia Cordata Extractbotanical positioning ingredient
The soothing botanical the concept is sold on. The practical constraint is solubility: houttuynia extracts are typically water or glycol based, so in an anhydrous oil they need an oil-dispersible fraction or a solubiliser to stay clear and stable. We will be straight about the loading that is actually achievable in an oil base rather than quoting a level that belongs in a toner.
Jojoba Oiloil phase
Simmondsia chinensis, a liquid wax ester rather than a triglyceride, which is why it resists oxidation better than most plant oils and gives a lighter, less greasy slip. In a cleansing oil its job is carrying the makeup-dissolving work without leaving a heavy film.
Olive Oil and Squalaneoil phase
Olive oil brings cleansing power and a familiar label; squalane keeps the finish light and is oxidatively stable. We use plant-derived squalane rather than shark-derived, which matters for vegan positioning and for the buyer questions that follow. The ratio between the heavier and lighter oils is where the after-feel is tuned.
Tocopheroloil-phase antioxidant
Present to protect the oil phase over shelf life, not as an anti-ageing active. Describing vitamin E as a treatment ingredient in a rinse-off oil would overstate a stability function. In an anhydrous product with no water for microbes, oxidation rather than microbial growth is the real shelf-life risk, and peroxide value is the number we track.

What is the MOQ and lead time?

Should we choose the PEG-based or PEG-free emulsifier?
It depends on which claim you are selling. PEG-based emulsifies faster and rinses cleaner, which is what most consumers actually judge a cleansing oil on. PEG-free is necessary if your positioning or a COSMOS route requires it, but it emulsifies more slowly and needs a higher use level, so the cost per unit rises. We will send both so the decision is made on skin rather than on paper.
How do you handle the shelf life of an oil product?
An anhydrous formula has no water for microbial growth, so the limiting factor is oxidation of the oil phase. We control it through oil selection, tocopherol, and packaging that limits headspace and light, and we verify it with peroxide value and accelerated testing on the approved sample.
Can we claim it prevents breakouts or clogged pores?
We would advise against it and we build the formula on that basis. Blemish-prevention language moves the product toward a regulated category in several markets, and China requires efficacy filing for that kind of claim. Thorough removal of makeup, sunscreen and pore buildup is what the format genuinely does, and it is a claim we can support.
How much houttuynia extract can you actually put in an oil?
Less than a water-based product, and we would rather say so than print a number that belongs to a toner. Most houttuynia material is water or glycol based, so in an anhydrous oil it needs an oil-dispersible fraction or a solubiliser, and pushing the loading turns the oil cloudy or unstable. We will show you the level that stays clear and stable over accelerated testing.
Can you do a fragrance-free version?
Yes, and it is a common request for sensitive-skin lines. We can also supply a fragrance-free base plus a separate fragrance so you can adjust the scent across markets without reformulating.
