How the Active Ingredients Work
A balm whose texture, melt behaviour and rinse-off are all set by the wax and emulsifier structure around the oil. The system below is our standard ODM baseline, adjustable for your target market and price point.
Wax and Emulsifier Basestructuring and rinse-off system
This is the formula, in practice. The wax blend sets how firm the balm is in the jar and the temperature at which it starts to melt; the emulsifier decides whether water turns it into a clean milky rinse or a greasy film. The two are tuned together, because a harder wax structure needs more emulsifier to break down at the same speed. PEG-based and PEG-free routes are both available, with the same speed-versus-positioning tradeoff as our cleansing oil.
Melt Point Specificationset per destination climate
The point most briefs miss and the one that generates the most complaints. A balm specified for temperate retail will slump or fully liquefy in an unrefrigerated container crossing the tropics, and customers read a soft or separated balm as a defective product. We set the melt point against your destination climate and shipping conditions, then confirm it with high-temperature transit simulation before production. Raising it improves survivability but makes the balm harder to pick up, so it is a deliberate tradeoff rather than a single correct number.
Camellia Oilprimary oil phase
Camellia seed oil, high in oleic acid, which is what gives the rich cushioned melt the format is bought for and a good affinity for dissolving sunscreen and long-wear makeup. Grade matters for both colour and odour stability: a refined grade keeps the balm pale and neutral, while a less processed grade carries more natural scent and colour that some brands want and others treat as a fault.
Squalane and Tocopheroloil phase and antioxidant
Plant-derived squalane keeps the melted texture from feeling heavy and is oxidatively stable. Tocopherol protects the oil phase over shelf life rather than acting as a treatment ingredient. As with any anhydrous product, oxidation rather than microbial growth is the shelf-life constraint, and peroxide value is what we track.

Contributes madecassoside and asiaticoside, the components associated with calming visible redness, and strengthens the ingredient list a buyer reads on pack. Which form you specify changes what the number means: a solvent-based extract varies in actives between suppliers, a standardised glycoside powder is titrated, and TECA is a defined titrated fraction. The figure above is on an extract basis and sits in the assist tier, because in a rinse-off balm contact time is short by design — we position it as a soothing contributor rather than a treatment active, and paying for a higher-assay form here mostly adds cost a customer will not notice.

Will the balm melt in transit to a tropical market?
Not if the melt point is specified for it, which is why we ask about your destination and shipping route before formulating. An unrefrigerated container crossing the tropics can exceed the melt point of a balm designed for temperate retail. We set the wax structure for your conditions and verify it with high-temperature transit simulation on the approved sample.
Can you make it firmer or softer?
Yes, and it is a real decision rather than a preference. A firmer balm survives heat better but is harder to pick up with a spatula and reads as less luxurious; a softer balm feels better in use and is more vulnerable in transit. We will send samples across the range so you can judge where your market sits.
Does it rinse off completely without a second cleanser?
It emulsifies and rinses clean on its own, and many customers use it as a single step. We still recommend positioning it as a first cleanse, because that is how the category is understood and because selling a pairing raises basket size.
Can we claim it cleans out pores or prevents blemishes?
Removal of makeup, sunscreen and surface pore buildup is what the format does and we can support that. Blemish-prevention wording is a different matter: it moves the product toward a regulated category in several markets and China requires efficacy filing for it, so we would advise against it and build the formula on that basis.
Is the camellia oil grade worth paying for?
It depends on what you want the balm to look and smell like. A refined grade stays pale and neutral, which suits a minimalist premium presentation. A less processed grade carries natural colour and scent that reads as authentic to some buyers and as a defect to others. We will show you both rather than decide for you.
