How the Active Ingredients Work
Four parts do the work: a cationic conditioning system carrying more deposit than a daily conditioner would, fatty alcohols building the thick body a jar product needs, hydrolysed keratin for the damaged cuticle, and an argan and coconut oil pair for lasting slip. The system below is our standard ODM starting point, adjustable for your target market and price point.
Cationic conditioning systemricher than a daily conditioner, set by rinse-out feel
Behentrimonium Methosulfate blended with fatty alcohols. Hair keratin carries a net negative surface charge, more so where the cuticle is lifted or damaged, so a positively charged C22 quat adsorbs preferentially onto exactly the areas that need it. A mask can run this heavier than a conditioner because the longer dwell time and the thorough rinse that follows a treatment step give you more room before the hair starts to feel coated. Two notes for your specification: the percentage in a BTMS grade name refers to active content rather than total material, so grade conversions must be run on active basis rather than swapped one for one. Behentrimonium Methosulfate is not listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, so the level is a performance and cost decision rather than a regulatory one. Where a project specifies a chloride-based quat instead, Annex III entry 287 caps behentrimonium chloride at 5.0% in rinse-off hair products and entry 286 caps cetrimonium and steartrimonium chloride at 2.5%, with the sum respecting both limits at once.
Fatty alcoholsco-structurant, sets the jar body
Cetyl and cetearyl alcohol. Despite the name these are waxy solids, not drying alcohols, and in a mask they carry more weight than in a conditioner because a jar product has to hold its shape when a customer scoops it. Too soft and it reads cheap in the hand, too firm and it drags on wet hair instead of spreading. The cetearyl to cetyl ratio is what moves this formula along that line, which means texture can be retuned for your brief without touching the active level — a useful lever when a buyer likes the performance but wants a different feel.
Hydrolysed keratinprotein repair agent
Hydrolysed keratin fragments are small enough to settle into gaps in a roughened cuticle, where they raise the smoothness a comb registers and even out how the surface reflects light. Worth being precise about what this does: it is surface repair, not structural reconstruction. Keratin does not rebuild disulphide bonds broken by bleach or a perm, and no rinse-off product does. What it delivers is a fibre that combs with less snagging and looks less dull, and a mask delivers more of it than a conditioner simply because it sits on the hair longer. Protein is heat-sensitive, so it goes in during cool-down rather than the hot phase. One commercial point to plan around: keratin is animal-derived, so a vegan claim needs hydrolysed wheat or soy protein in its place — that is a different base, not a substitution on the same batch sheet.
Argan and coconut oil pairslip and lasting softness
Argan oil sits mainly on the surface for immediate slip and shine, while coconut oil's shorter chain length lets a portion migrate into the fibre during the warm dwell time a mask gets. Running both is deliberate: surface-only oils feel good in the shower and fade by the next wash, while penetrating oils build softness that survives it. The load is higher here than in the matching conditioner and that is the main reason a customer feels a difference between the two products. The ceiling is set by rinse-out — past a point the hair reads greasy at the root in humid weather rather than nourished, which is a bigger risk in Southeast Asia than in dry markets, so we set the pair by wet-comb and next-day feel on local water rather than by how rich the formula looks on paper.

What is the MOQ?

How is this different from your conditioner, beyond being thicker?
The honest answer is dwell time, and everything else follows from it. A conditioner is rinsed within a minute, a mask sits five to ten, so a mask can carry a heavier oil load and a richer cationic level and still rinse clean. That is a real difference a customer feels, but it is a difference of degree rather than of mechanism — both work by depositing cationic material onto negatively charged damaged hair. If a brand wants to claim something categorically different, that needs a different technology, not a thicker version of the same one.
Can this repair bleached or permed hair?
It repairs how the hair behaves, not how it is built. Bleaching and perming break disulphide bonds inside the fibre, and no rinse-off product rebuilds them — hydrolysed keratin settles into surface gaps so hair combs more easily and looks less dull, which is a genuine and visible benefit. We keep claims on that side of the line because the alternative invites substantiation questions in export markets, and because a customer who is told their bleach damage is reversed will notice it is not.
Can you make a vegan version?
Yes, with a substitution you should know about. Keratin is animal-derived, so a vegan mask uses hydrolysed wheat or soy protein instead. Those proteins perform respectably but the slip profile differs, so it is a separate base with its own sample round rather than a label change on the same formula. Tell us at briefing if vegan is the target and we will start from the plant-protein base.
What is the sampling and production timeline?

Which export certifications and claims should I plan for?
