How the Active Ingredients Work
Four parts do the work: film-forming polymers that reduce how freely dye leaves the fibre, amino acids that address the charge damage colouring leaves behind, hydrolysed keratin for cuticle smoothness, and vitamin E with plant oils for surface shine. Colour-lock polymer systemfilm former, set by rinse-out feel
Cationic film-forming polymers that deposit a thin layer over the cuticle, helping it lie flatter so that the next wash swells the fibre less and lets less dye out. The mechanism is worth describing accurately to your marketing team: this is a barrier and smoothing effect, not dye fixation — nothing in a rinse-off product chemically bonds dye into the cortex. Level is limited by build-up rather than by regulation: push the polymer and the first wash feels excellent while the fourth reads coated and heavy, especially on fine coloured hair. We set it against repeat-wash testing rather than single-use feel, which is the only way this claim survives contact with a real customer.
Amino acid blendcharge-repair agents
Oxidative colouring converts some of the fibre's cystine to cysteic acid, which leaves the surface more negatively charged and more water-attracting than virgin hair — chemically, that is a large part of why coloured hair tangles, dulls and fades. A low molecular weight amino acid blend addresses that surface state directly and, being small, distributes more evenly through the fibre than proteins can. This is the ingredient choice that makes the product specifically for coloured hair rather than a general mask with colour on the label, and it is the point most competing value-line products skip.
Hydrolysed keratinprotein repair agent
Hydrolysed keratin settles into gaps in a roughened cuticle, raising the smoothness a comb registers and evening out how the surface reflects light. On coloured hair the shine contribution matters as much as the feel, because a lifted, uneven cuticle scatters light and reads as dull no matter how good the colour itself is. Being clear about the limit: this is surface smoothing, and it does not rebuild disulphide bonds broken during processing. Protein goes in at cool-down since it is heat-sensitive. Keratin is animal-derived, so a vegan claim needs hydrolysed wheat or soy protein in its place, which is a different base rather than a substitution on the same batch sheet.

Tocopherol works as an antioxidant in the formula and plant oils handle surface slip and light reflection. Two honest notes for claim planning. Colour fade in daily use is driven more by washing than by oxidation, so vitamin E is a supporting element here rather than the reason the product works — we would not build the front-of-pack claim on it. And on sun protection, hair does fade faster with UV exposure, but a rinse-off mask leaves too little material behind to function as UV protection, and describing it that way creates a claim we cannot substantiate. Oil load is kept moderate because coloured hair is often already porous and reads greasy quickly.

Does this actually stop colour fading?
It slows fade, and the distinction is worth keeping in your copy. Colour leaves mainly during washing, when water swells the fibre and lets dye molecules out through a lifted cuticle. A film-forming mask helps the cuticle lie flatter so less escapes per wash. What it does not do is bind dye into the hair, and no rinse-off product does. Extends colour vibrancy is a claim we can stand behind; locks in colour reads as fixation and is harder to defend if challenged.
Can you add UV protection for sun-exposed hair?
Sun does accelerate fade, so the concern is real, but a rinse-off mask is the wrong format to solve it — too little material stays on the hair after rinsing to function as UV protection, and claiming otherwise would not survive scrutiny. If UV is central to your positioning, a leave-in product is the format that can carry it, and we can quote that as a separate SKU alongside this one.
Why amino acids rather than just more protein?
Because they address different problems. Colouring converts part of the fibre's cystine to cysteic acid, leaving a more negatively charged, more water-loving surface — that charge change is why coloured hair tangles and dulls. Low molecular weight amino acids act on that surface state and distribute more evenly than larger proteins can. Protein fills physical gaps in the cuticle.
