Key Active Ingredients
How the Active Ingredients Work
This page is written as a cosmetic body care product with a citronella scent profile, and that is a regulatory decision rather than a marketing one. A repellency claim moves the product out of cosmetics in most of the markets this category sells into, so we build and describe it as a fragranced, skin-conditioning liquid for daily use in tropical climates. The botanical set carries the scent and the after-feel; nothing on this page claims to repel, deter or protect against insects. If repellency is central to your brief, that is a different product on a different registration route and we will tell you what it involves rather than write it into cosmetic copy.
Citronella oilfragrance-level, set per project
INCI: Cymbopogon Nardus Oil. Present as the scent signature of the product, which is what this format is recognised for. We deliberately do not publish a use level tied to performance, because a stated dose alongside a repellency claim is exactly what pushes a product into the pesticide and biocide route. In the US, EPA lists oil of citronella as an active ingredient in registered skin-applied insect repellents, and citronella also appears in the minimum-risk exemption at 40 CFR 152.25(f) — but that exemption requires pesticide-style labelling with active ingredient percentages, so it is a pesticide pathway rather than a cosmetic one. As a cosmetic, we treat citronella as fragrance and set the level for scent.
Lemongrasssupporting botanical
INCI: Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Oil. Rounds out the citrus-herbal top note and gives the product its fresh character, which is the actual reason customers repurchase a scented body liquid. Level set per project against the scent brief. Described as fragrance throughout; no functional claim is attached.
Tea treesupporting botanical
INCI: Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil. Used here for its scent contribution, sitting under the citronella and lemongrass as part of the fragrance profile rather than as a functional ingredient. It also carries the clean, fresh association buyers expect after time outdoors. We do not write that it is antibacterial or antifungal, or that it treats bites or skin infections: those are therapeutic and biocidal claims outside the cosmetic category. Level per project and confirmed in the safety assessment, since tea tree has a sensitisation profile worth respecting on a product used daily over large areas.
Chamomile extractsupporting botanical
INCI: Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract. Carries the calming half of the positioning at appearance and sensory level: helping skin look and feel calmer after time outdoors. That wording is deliberate. We do not write that it soothes bites, reduces irritation or has an anti-inflammatory effect, because those describe a physiological action rather than how skin looks and feels.
Aloe verasupporting humectant
INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice. The skin-conditioning backbone of the formula and the reason it works as a daily body product rather than an occasional one. Contributes the light, fast-absorbing feel the format needs in humid conditions. Supportable wording stays at hydrating and helping skin feel comfortable. Level set per project.
Light base systemsupporting base
The base decides whether the product is usable daily in a tropical climate, which is the real constraint on this format: anything heavy or tacky will not be repurchased in humidity. We build for fast absorption without stickiness, and the alcohol level is a trade-off between dry-down speed and comfort on skin that may be sun-exposed. Set per project and confirmed on the approved sample.
Formulation & Customization Options
| Service model | ODM (adjust our existing citronella body care base) or full OEM custom development |
| Scent intensity | Citronella and lemongrass ratio adjustable from a light fresh profile to a pronounced herbal signature; set for scent rather than to a performance level |
| Claim scope | Cosmetic fragrance and skin-conditioning wording only. Repellency, insect-deterrent, bite-protection, antibacterial and anti-itch claims are not supported on this product |
| Base system | Light fast-absorbing base as standard for humid climates; reduced-alcohol version available for sensitive or sun-exposed skin |
| Format | Spray bottle or roll-on, 50–100ml; both quotable from the same base |
| Packaging | Spray bottle and roll-on as standard; a tight closure is worth specifying because the citronella top note is volatile and drives the whole scent impression |
| Certifications | ISO 22716 and GMPC certified facility; SGS testing supported on request. Halal, COSMOS and vegan scoping quoted to your requirement rather than held as a standing certificate |
Who This Product Is Built For
Tropical-climate family body care
Daily use in heat and humidity is the brief, and it is won on texture rather than on botanicals: a light, non-tacky finish is what makes a body liquid repurchasable in Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia. We set the base for fast absorption and confirm the feel on sample.
Outdoor lifestyle ranges
The citronella-and-lemongrass signature is strongly associated with time spent outdoors, and that association does the marketing work without a functional claim attached. We supply the scent-led and skin-conditioning copy that keeps the product cosmetic in every market you ship to.
Brands that need the classification boundary drawn clearly
This is the single most misclassified product type we quote. A brand asks for a citronella body spray, writes one line about mosquitoes on the artwork, and has created a pesticide in the US and a biocidal product in the EU without intending to. We write this page so the boundary is visible before artwork, and we will not add repellency wording to a cosmetic quotation.
Scent and format ranges
Light to pronounced citronella-lemongrass profile. Spray or roll-on. Standard or reduced-alcohol base. Chamomile and aloe levels adjustable where daily-use comfort is the priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we label this as a mosquito repellent?
Not as a cosmetic, and this is the most important answer on the page. A repellency claim changes what the product legally is in most of the markets this format sells into. In the US, a skin-applied repellent is regulated as a pesticide: EPA lists oil of citronella as an active ingredient in registered skin-applied repellents, and while citronella does appear in the minimum-risk exemption at 40 CFR 152.25(f), that route still requires pesticide-style labelling including the active ingredient percentage by weight. In the EU, repellents fall under the Biocidal Products Regulation rather than the Cosmetics Regulation. Several Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern markets treat repellents as pesticides or controlled products too. So the choice is genuine: a cosmetic with a citronella scent, or a registered repellent. We build and quote the first, and we will point you to a specialist for the second.
The slug and product image mention repellent — why?
They are legacy identifiers from when this SKU was first listed, and we leave them alone on purpose: changing a URL loses the search history attached to it. The product name, description and every claim on this page are cosmetic. If the historical naming is a problem for your artwork or your regulatory file, the product name you sell under is yours to choose and has nothing to do with our internal file names.
Can we say it soothes bites?
No. That is a therapeutic claim about treating a skin condition, and in the US the insect bite and sting drug category is a separate regulatory route with its own ingredient list. What we support is appearance and sensory level: helping skin look and feel calmer after time outdoors. That is a real benefit the chamomile and aloe deliver, and it is sellable without changing the product category.
What about antibacterial claims for the tea tree?
Also no. Antibacterial and antifungal claims are therapeutic or biocidal depending on the market, and tea tree is a common trigger for exactly this misclassification. We include it as a botanical associated with a clean, fresh feel and describe it that way. Front-of-pack botanical naming is fine; a mechanism claim on the back is not.
Then what is the honest selling story here?
A daily body care product with a citronella-lemongrass scent, built light enough to use in humidity, with aloe and chamomile for comfort after time outdoors. The scent association does a great deal of work on its own, which is why this format sells steadily in tropical markets. The commercial risk is not a weak story, it is one stray line of artwork copy that reclassifies the whole SKU.
What are the MOQ and lead time?
MOQ is 2,000–3,000 bottles per SKU and lead time is 45–55 days after sample approval, including stability testing. Sampling runs 3–4 weeks and covers the scent profile alongside the base dry-down. This is our standard ODM baseline, adjustable for your target market and price point.
